Volvo's SUV, built off the P2 platform which underpins mid-size Volvo models, is svelte in design, expansive in size (a third-row bench option raises seat count to seven) and loaded with sophisticated safety systems plus optional AWD traction. This year the Haldex AWD system adds "Instant Traction" to move twice as much torque quickly to rear wheels as needed, such as during takeoff.

Base model XC90 2.5T totes Volvo's light-pressure turbo 2.5-liter five-cylinder with 208 hp through a five-speed automatic. A souped-up version XC90 V8 packs Volvo's first eight-cylinder engine. The 4.4-liter V8 kicks high power -- 315 hp.

XC90 V8 also carries a load of standard equipment including a six-speed automatic transmission and AWD traction with the third-row bench aboard and premium accessories to forge a deluxe top tier for Volvo's SUV. New paints like Willow Green and White Pearlescent work on the 2006 XC90 V8.
