Controlled Chaos at Bristol Busch Grand National Race

Jason Keller, starting from the second spot, took the lead before the end of the first lap, but hardly had a chance to get comfortable up front before the first caution flag waved at lap 3. On the restart, the bumping and banging that define short track racing began in earnest. Kevin Harvick bumped Kevin Grubb, almost sending Grubb sliding out of control up the track, but Grubb managed to get his car straightened out. Behind them, Brian Vickers, slowing to avoid another car, slid up the track and cut a tire. No caution came out for either incident.

The second of the day's many cautions flew on lap 18, following a minor encounter between Ron Young and Chase Montgomery that send both cars spinning. Just nine laps later, Grubb slid up into the outside wall and limped his car back to the pits under a green flag, but traffic behind him slowed sharply, causing a chain reaction that sent five cars into the pits or behind the wall. Shortly after the restart, Scott Riggs passed Keller for the lead. Two more cautions in quick succession started the leaders thinking about pit strategy and fuel mileage as crew chiefs calculated if their cars could go the distance. Harvick pitted under caution on lap 61, giving up considerable track position to gamble on making it to the checkered flag, more than 180 laps away, without running out of gas.

Amidst many cautions and very short green flag runs of ten or fifteen laps, Hermie Sadler's car crept up quietly through the field, and by the time the 8th caution flew on lap 109, he had worked his way up to fourth from a last in the field start. Many drivers came into the pits under the yellow, including the lead car of Scott Riggs, leaving pole sitter David Green in the lead. Unable to hold the position against the fresher tires of the #23 of Scott Wimmer, Green slipped back into seventh position, saved by another quick caution, and pulls down pit lane.

With just less than 100 laps to go, it appeared that Harvick's pit strategy might pay off, as he takes the lead from Wimmer, who drops back to third. Several laps later, Wimmer and Riggs collide after taking opposite lines around the lapped car of Chase Montgomery, and Wimmer heads into the garage.

The longest green flag stretch of the day followed, heightening concerns in Harvick's pit about fuel mileage, but a late caution with only eight laps to go put their minds at ease. Following contact between Ron Hornaday and Kasey Kahne that sent Hornaday spinning across the track, NASCAR red flagged the race, bringing the field to a halt while they cleared the track. The drivers shut off their engines and waited for the restart, according to NASCAR's ten-lap rule, which is intended to prevent yellow flag finishes.

The restart proved uneventful as Harvick pulled easily away from the second place car of Tony Raines to take the checkered flag, continuing the chain of Winston Cup driver wins in the Busch Series this season, and adding to the brewing controversy about allowing the more experienced Cup drivers to race in NASCAR's lower series.
