Celebrating History At The Milwaukee Mile

The Busch Series rolled into Milwaukee for the GNC 250 amidst a season-long celebration of 100 years of racing on the historic track. The first auto race at the flat, one mile track that used to host horse races ran during the summer of 1903, and many of NASCAR's pioneers built their reputation at the Milwaukee Mile as it evolved from a dirt track to a full time racing venue.

Rain canceled qualifying for the second time this season, so the starting lineup was determined by owner points. Johnny Sauter started from the pole, joined by David Green in the front row in a race that has been won by a driver starting on the front row for the past 5 years. Nineteen of the 43 drivers starting the event were making their first start on the Milwaukee Mile.

When the green flag waved, Scott Riggs wasted no time in challenging Johnny Sauter for the lead, finally overtaking him on lap 5. The first caution of the day came on lap 21, when Chad Blount spun trying to avoid the slower car of Rich Markle, who was trying to get through traffic to get to pit road. Blount rejoined the field, undamaged but a lap down, only to suffer a mid-race engine failure that ended his day on lap 137.

On the restart, Ron Hornaday took the lead from Riggs, and held it for nearly 50 laps before Brian Vickers took advantage of lap traffic to take the top spot. He drove off from the field until a short caution brought the field back together on lap 155 after Dana White blew an engine. Trouble in the pits set Vickers back to 5th, while Riggs reclaims the lead.

The third caution of the day came when Riggs and Hornaday, racing for the lead, came up on Shane Hmiel who was trying to hang onto the tail end of the lead lap. Hornaday and Hmiel made contact and both cars spun, causing NASCAR officials to penalize Hmiel one lap for rough driving. Hornaday managed to stay on the lead lap, despite coming into the pits to repair the damage to the front of his car.

As the laps wound down, Jason Keller challenged his teammate, Scott Riggs, for the lead as Vickers struggled to catch the leaders once again. The leaders raced side by side for several laps before Keller edged to the lead. A late caution with 20 laps to go set the stage for a short shootout to the finish between the 15 cars remaining on the lead lap. Despite fuel mileage concerns, most of the lead lap cars stayed on the track to await the restart.

On the restart, Keller held off the rest of the field to hang on to the lead. A final caution came out with just 2 laps to go, when Mike Bliss spun into the outside wall, and Keller took the checked flag under caution, followed by Brian Vickers and David Stremme.
