Question About a Leaking Grand Prix

Question: My Leaking Grand Prix

When I make left-hand turns. Water pours out over the blower motor onto the passenger floorboard. I just had this problem serviced. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I found someone on another site that had the same problem.

Answer: This appears to be a common problem as GM has issued a technical service bulletin for the problem: #00-01-38-012 dated December 2000. The good news is, the fix should have been relatively quick and not very expensive.

The evaporator core (part of the A/C system) is located inside the driver's compartment of the vehicle, usually on the passenger's side. The blower motor blows air across the evaporator core which produces the cool air you feel thru the vents. The evaporator is housed inside a tightly sealed box which prevents anything but the air from the blower motor to come in contact with it. As you know from your home A/C system, it creates condensation, so this sealed box has a drain tube that allows the condensation to run out under the vehicle. (This is why you see water puddles under cars in parking lots during the summer). This small drain hole sometimes gets clogged with debris from the road and the condensation (water) backs up in the case. When the level gets high enough, the water spills out into the floorboard of the car.

Some cars are more prone to this problem than others because of the location of the drain hole. The closer it is to the bottom of the vehicle, the more likely it is to become clogged with dirt and debris from the road.

Hopefully you won't have to deal with this problem in the future, but at least you have an idea of the cause and what to do to fix it.
