1997 Ford Thunderbird

QUESTION: My question is not about auto repair specifically but rather a problem I have with the handling of my 1997 Ford Thunderbird in rain and winter driving conditions. I was hoping you could give me some tips. I live in West Virginia and although the winters are not severe, it's muddy and slushy for about 6 months. My rear-wheel-drive Thunderbird slides terribly in rain and slushy conditions and I was wondering what could be done (short of selling my car) to help me keep control of the car. The car came with something called "traction control" but it doesn't seem to help much. Would "performance" tires help? If so, what brand/model do you recommend?

ANSWER: First, you need to make sure your traction control is engaged. Check your owner's manual. Sometimes with traction control, "on" is "off" and "off" is engaged).

The most important thing you should have on any vehicle for mobility, and more importantly, safety, is proper tires. You can use a snow tire for mud, but there may be tires specifically for mud. What you are looking for is deeper tread that will move the mud out of the way. The compound will enable the tires to get good traction in low temperatures and on the slippery mud or snow. Open tread areas will get a grip on unplowed roads and driveways. Be aware that these tires should only be used until the tread is half worn, then they need to be replaced. Obviously, the best tires should be put on the front of a front-wheel-drive car since the front tires do the bulk of the braking and all of the power and steering work.

Remember to drive cautiously. Drive slowly, look and plan farther ahead, and accelerate, steer and brake gently. A good hint is to press the brakes or gas pedal as if you were stepping on eggshells.

By far the most important element is good tires. I recommend those made by Bridgestone, Firestone, Michelin or Goodyear, and buy the best they have -- it is cheap insurance.
