New Mexico Graduated License Law

Permit

Age 15+

You must be at least 15 years of age, enrolled in an approved driver education course approved by the Traffic Safety Bureau and including DWI education (Driver Ed in a Box® is a correspondence driver education course approved by the Traffic Safety Bureau) and pass the knowledge test and vision test.

If you are under the age of 18, you must also have a consent form signed by your parent or guardian. This permit allows you drive under the supervision of a licensed driver who is 21 years of age or older, and has held a license for three years in New Mexico or any other state.

Provisional License

Age 15 ½ - 17

You must complete the classroom correspondence course requirements AND complete the practice driving component which consists of not less than 50 hours of actual driving, including not less than 10 hours of nighttime driving. Your parent or guardian will certify that you have completed the practice driving component. The record keeping forms in the Parent Companion will make it easy to verify and track your practice driving component.

You will have to pass a written and road test, and a visual screening.

The minimum age to receive your Provisional Driver’s License is 15 years and 6 months, and you must have held your Permit for at least 6 months.

You must not have been convicted of a traffic violation in the 90 days prior to applying for a Provisional Driver’s License.
