Overhauled last year with more cabin space and optional third-row seats, Explorer returns in 2003 with new equipment packages and more stand-alone options. Ford's AdvanceTrac computer-controlled anti-skid equipment will be optional but with delayed availability. The NBX package with a Yakima LoadWarrior roof basket forges another variation. The rack -- measuring 44 inches by 39 inches and 6.5 inches deep -- corrals extra cargo, particularly messy goods. For power Explorer's standard plant, a 4.0-liter single-cam V6, delivers 210 hp through to a five-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic. An optional 4.6-liter V8 in single-cam design leaps to 239 hp. For entertaining backseat passengers, Explorer offers a new DVD-based entertainment kit with wireless headphones and a seven-inch color screen that flips down from the ceiling.
