The compact-class trucks from Toyota reinforce brakes on all models by adding an anti-lock brake system (ABS) across the board as standard equipment. Tacoma looks tough with a raised hood and bold grille up front. The extensive array of models includes three different cabin designs with the regular two-door and extended XtraCab plus a four-door Double Cab. Powertrains begin with the base twin-cam 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine worth 142 hp. The 4x4 Tacomas and PreRunners use a twin-cam 2.7-liter four that rises to 150 hp. Optional power for 4WD Tacomas and 2WD PreRunners is supplied by a 3.4-liter dual-cam V6 good for 190 hp. Low-to-the-ground S-Runner effects the stance of a customized drop job, while the Double Cab does the opposite with its 11-inch clearance designed for off-pavement treks. PreRunner 4x2 has the look of a customized 4x4 with a tall stance and flared fenders. Also, it carries the suspension of the 4WD Tacoma, with independent double-wishbone design in front and a live axle in back working in conjunction with leaf springs and hydraulic shocks. An optional TRD Off-Road package, available on 4WD Tacoma trucks, is on tap for PreRunner too. The package adds Bilstein shocks for a Regular Cab or Tokico shocks for the Double Cab, a locking rear differential with the V6 engine, progressive-rate front coil springs and modified rear leaf spring suspension, a thicker stabilizer bar up front and 16-inch alloy wheels capped by P265/70R16 tires and rugged black overfenders. Tacoma's S-Runner variation consists of a 4x2 Xtracab with five-speed manual stick and V6 power. A suspension tuned for sporty performance also applies, as do Tokico gas shocks. Further, the ride height drops by one inch from the standard 4x2 Tacoma.
