Millions of Camry sedans have been issued since the 1983 inception of this mid-size model, which accounts for a fifth of all Toyotas sold in North America. The third design of 1992 established a new benchmark for aerodynamic styling and performance, while revisions in 1997 producing a larger sedan with more interior room, reflecting a Toyota goal to Americanize Camry. A new platform for Camry came last year and, compared to the previous version, it expanded the structure substantially in every direction. Camry's cabin represents a more efficient design and provides more comfortable seats and more standard equipment. Trim tiers divide into LE, XLE and SE editions, each equipped with either a four-cylinder or V6 engine. Camry's 2.4-liter four-in-line base engine reaches 157 hp yet qualifies for ULEV (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) status and earns high economy numbers. The optional 3.0-liter V6, mated to a four-speed automatic, generates 192 hp and also scores ULEV status. In the 2003 series, Camry XLE gains foglamps as standard gear, while all trims equipped with an automatic transmission offer power adjustable pedals.
