2003 Chevrolet SSR Crossover Pickup Truck Sports Car

By the mid-point in model-year 2003, Chevrolet will add a new crossover vehicle to the truck line. Dubbed the SSR (Super Sport Roadster), this cross between a pickup and an open-top roadster looks extreme -- like nothing else on the road. There's a bed in back like a truck, but also a retractable hardtop that converts the vehicle via power controls to a breezy convertible. The lid folds in two pieces and tucks vertically behind front seats. Driving SSR is Chevy's short-block V8, the 5.3-liter plant mounted longitudinally and directing all torque to rear wheels. SSR rolls on five-spoke alloy wheels capped by performance tires measuring 19 inches up front but 20 inches in back to set up that sporty stance.
