Revamped A4 scores a face-lift aligning with grille patterns on A6 and A8. Two direct-injection engines go to A4, including a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder plant worth 200 hp and a 3.2-liter V6 at 255 hp. All A4 models also get Quattro AWD with six-speed transmissions -- manual or automatic.

Audi of Germany applies alphanumeric names to cars sorted by size and the number of cylinders in an engine -- thus model tags like A4, A6 and A8. Further, in Audi's lingo the Avant label denotes a station wagon format, FrontTrak means front-wheel-drive (FWD) and Quattro signifies all-wheel-drive (AWD) with a permanently engaged mechanism that distributes the engine's power to all wheels. Currently, Audi is revising the entire line through a three-year process that begin in 2004 with a new treatment of the high-tech flagship sedan, A8L.
