Ganassi Duo On The Front Row At Michigan

Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Tomas Scheckter, 22, and Scott Dixon, 23, will start on the front row of the Firestone Indy 400 at Michigan International Speedway July 27.

Scheckter, driving the No.10 Target Chip Ganassi Panoz G Force/Toyota/Firestone, won the MBNA Pole, his second of 2003, with a time of 32.3657 seconds, 222.458 mph.

Dixon, driving the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Panoz G Force/Toyota/Firestone, held the pole for a short time with a qualifying speed of 32.3704 seconds, 222.425 mph, before Scheckter topped his lap by only .0047 of a second.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing sweeping the front row marks the third consecutive year that teammates have started 1-2 in an open-wheel race at MIS. Scheckter and Buddy Rice started 1-2 in 2002 driving for Red Bull Cheever Racing. In 2001, Team Rahal teammates Kenny Brack and Max Papis started 1-2 in the CART race at MIS.

After winning the MBNA Pole last year in his first start at Michigan, Scheckter went on to win the inaugural IndyCar Series event on the 2-mile superspeedway. It was his first IndyCar Series victory.

The Firestone Indy 400 is the sixth race this season that Dixon has started on the front row. The second-place qualifying effort halted Dixos streak of three straight IndyCar Series poles (Richmond, Kansas and Nashville).

Two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves will start third after posting a time of 32.4393 seconds, 221.953 mph in the No. 3 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Toyota/Firestone.

Reigning IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr. qualified fourth with the new Gen IV Chevy Indy V-8 engine in the No. 4 Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone. Hornish posted a best lap of 32.4563 seconds, 221.837 mph.
