Tracy Takes Dramatic Pole For Molson Indy Vancouver

Paul Tracy has secured pole position for Sunday's Molson Indy Vancouver, round 11 of the Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford. Tracy responded to losing his pole yesterday, by letting his driving do the talking. And he took pole in emphatic style, the only man to lap under the 1:01 barrier with a lap of 1:00.926 (105.934mph).

"I didn't want anyone saying I got in the way today, so we ran our laps when the track wasn't the best for us, but I didn't want anyone pointing the finger at me." He completed his run with 11 minutes of the session still to run, so it was just a case of sitting in his pit watching the timing screens.

With eight minutes left, Patrick Carpentier hit the wall exiting the last turn, bringing out the red flags. By the time the track was clear there were only four minutes left, only enough for two hot laps from Tracy's challengers.

Bruno Junqueira, Tracy's closest challenger in the championship, came close to snatching pole, but really he need one more lap to get his tires up to optimum temperature. Even so, his lap of 1:01.070 (104.988) was faster than his overnight pole lap.

Surrounded by the media, Tracy received the Greg Moore Pole Award. All in all, this has the makings of a great race on Sunday.

"This year I've done my talking with my driving," said Tracy, "while the others did it in the pitlane or to the officials. But I set the mark today, and I made a point. We had the fastest car, and we did the job, no argument. I'm very happy now..."

Third on the grid will be Roberto Moreno, who set his lap of 1:01.172 (104.813mph) to record Herdez Competitions's best qualifying ever. "My side of the team was new this year," said Moreno, "and it is really coming together now."

Michel Jourdain will start fourth with a lap of 1:01.582 (104.115mph), and top rookie is again Sebastien Bourdais on 1:01.617 (104.056mph).
