Hurricane Jeanne and the Islands of the Bahamas Impact Limited

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism reports that only two islands within the 700 island-chain of The Bahamas, were affected by Hurricane Jeanne. The Bahamian archipelago extends longer than the entire length of Florida and storms in general do not impact all islands in The Bahamas. Hurricane Jeanne affected only the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama.

Nassau/Paradise Island, the nation's number one tourist destination experienced no impact from the storm and is operating business as usual with all airports, ports, marinas, tourist attractions and major hotels open and accepting reservations (except for SuperClubs Breezes opening Sept. 30 after completing cosmetic repairs undertaken after Hurricane Frances.)

Initial reports indicate that there was minimal additional damage to Grand Bahama Island as the eye of the storm passed to the north of the island. Grand Bahama International airport is open for commercial flights. Resorts on the island previously affected by Hurricane Frances are continuing to repair damage and are anticipated to re-open in time for the winter travel season.

On Saturday, September 25, 2004 the eye of Hurricane Jeanne passed over Marsh Harbour, Abaco. There was no loss of life reported and officials are currently on-island to assess the storm's impact on tourism infrastructure, after which a full report will be issued. The Out Islands of Exuma, Harbour Island, Long Island, Cat Island, Andros, Bimini and the Berry Islands were unaffected by Hurricane Jeanne and most properties, if not traditionally closed for the fall season, continue to accept reservations.
