Sri Lanka

The Foreign Office today revised its travel advice for Sri Lanka and no longer advises against travel to the north or east. However the advice does now advise against all but essential travel to the north or east (other than Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay).

The summary now reads:

  • We advise against all but essential travel to the north or east (other than Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay). Much of the north and east of Sri Lanka remains heavily mined, particularly around the A9 road to Jaffna.

  • There is a threat from domestic terrorism in Sri Lanka.

  • Most visits to Sri Lanka are trouble-free.

  • We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.
