Rear Crash Protection In Suvs & Pickups: Most Seat/Head Restraints Would Do A Poor Job Of Protecting People’s Necks In Rear-End Crashes

Only 6 of the seat/head restraint combinations in 44 current model SUVs are rated good for protection against whiplash injuries in rear-end crashes. None of the seat/head restraint designs in 15 pickup truck models earns a good rating. Tragedy In Utah Illustrates Dangers Of 15-Passenger Vans

On September 26, 2005, a 15-passenger van carrying college students from Utah State University tragically crashed into a ravine, killing nine of the passengers. Despite their numerous dangers, 15-passenger vans are regularly filled to their full passenger capacity, and are routinely marketed to churches, schools, nursing homes, and day cares as safe forms of transportation.
