An Infant Should Never be Placed in Front of an Airbag!

Although most drivers have heard and are heeding airbag warnings, new research shows that roughly 175,000 babies are still being placed in the front seat, putting them at serious risk. A new survey of parents who have babies under age one reveals which parents are least likely to take the precautions of always properly restraining babies in rear-facing safety seats in the back seat.

Ford has teamed with Sesame Street TV to get the message to children; General Motors has bilingual information available at their dealers; Mitsubishi has an active campaign involving the Police Departments; and Chrysler is partnering with the Department of Transportation to send 10 marked minivans on continual tours, making the correct information available at malls, fairs and other public gatherings. The Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the American Academy of Pediatrics will also announce intensive new outreach to families most at risk.

While the rate of child deaths from airbags is down dramatically -- by almost 50 percent -- children continue to die. Of particular concern is the number of infant deaths. Infants under one year of age account for about 1 in 12 of the children at risk; yet, they account for about 1 in 4 of the child deaths. These numbers are especially alarming, given strongly worded warnings that infants should NEVER be placed in front of airbags.
