Defect: The lower latching arm on the latch anchorage may not meet the required material strength. If the child seat is connected to the vehicle using the latch anchorage, in the event of a vehicle crash, the child seat may detach from its lower anchorage, possibly resulting in serious injury to the child occupant. Corrective Action: Parents should replace this seat with an appropriate new child seat immediately and return the Kiddy Topsafe seat to any authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer for a full refund. When inquiring about the recall, Mercedes-Benz requests that the customer mention the recall campaign #2004 120005. Model(s): Mercedes-Benz Infant Restraint (5-20lbs) and Booster Seat (40-100 lbs) equipped with the BabySmartâ„¢ airbag deactivation device.
Production Dates: February 1, 1997, through July 31, 1999
Defect: If the Mercedes-Benz Infant Restraint or the Booster Seat is incorrectly positioned or moves several inches or more forward of the seat back in the front passenger seat of the Mercedes-Benz BabySmartâ„¢ equipped vehicles, it may not automatically deactivate the passenger front airbag. The status of the BabySmartâ„¢ system in the vehicle will, however, always correctly indicate to the driver if the airbag is deactivated or not, by the illumination or non-illumination of the "AIRBAG OFF" indicator.
Corrective Action: Mercedes-Benz will contact owners and instruct them to bring the recall restraints/seats to a Mercedes-Benz retailer for a replacement seat free of charge. A video illustration of the correct installation procedure will also be provided with every replacement seat.
