Goodyear Environmental, Health, Safety Efforts Hit Web

Goodyear has made a clean sweep to a Web site devoted to its environmental, health and safety efforts.

The 2003 annual report is a broader review of the tire company’s global efforts normally outlined in a printed version. Consumers also can request a brochure or ask questions on the site.

The Web site reviews behavior-based and proactive health and safety systems, ergonomics for associates on the job, chemical material management, environmental impact of tires, scrap tire recovery for recycling and reuse and the Six Sigma process improvement system.

In addition, a new “Hot Topics” section reviews Goodyear’s position on several subjects in the global news. To view the revamped site, go to www.goodyear.com/corporate/environment.html.

“Goodyear is committed to protecting the environment and the health and safety of our associates, our customers and the communities where we operate,” said David Chapman, director of global environmental engineering.

For example, the Web site notes that scrap tire recovery exceeds aluminum and PET plastic recycling rates. Aluminum recycling stands at about 35 percent, while scrap tire recovery leads most other forms of reuse, at 77.6 percent.

Only 16 percent of global scrap tires end up in landfills. About 35 percent are used in energy applications.

Goodyear’s safety, health and water and energy conservation efforts are equally impressive, according to Mike Porter, global director for health, safety and chemical material management. “We realize we’ve come a long way in our work, but it’s never finished. We’re always looking for ways to do more to reach ever-higher legal and ethical standards.”

Porter said associates follow Goodyear’s credo - Protect Our Good Name - in their everyday work. “It’s a constant reminder to do the right thing.”
