Manual Transmission

A system where the driver selects the proper amount of power and torque linking the power of the engine to the wheels. Involves a stick shift and is normally available in 4, 5 or 6 forward gears and 1 reverse. Trucks can have as many as 20 forward gears and 5 or 6 for reverse. The driver manually depresses a clutch and selects the proper gear via a shifter usually mounted on a center console. The clutch, gas, and shifter have to be coordinated in order to obtain smooth and rapid shifts. The benefits of a manual transmissions are: greater control over the transmission, lower initial purchase cost, depending on the make and model, a greater number of forward gears which aid in fuel economy and help take the best advantage of the engine's range of power.
