Engine

When applied to autos, it is invariably an internal combustion powerplant that utilizes the force of exploding fuel to create a rotating action to drive the car's wheels. This fuel is usually gasoline, but can be diesel fuel, natural gas, various alcohols or propane. The engine is normally comprised of pistons linked to a crankshaft to create this rotating motion, but can involve a Wankel rotary engine which uses a rotating piston. Other terms which can refer to the engine are powerplant, which is a broad term, or motor, which is a little more specific, but can also apply to electric powerplants. These electric motors are becoming more common as battery-powered and hybrid cars are becoming available.
