White House Uses G-8 Summit to Advance Global Hydrogen Initiative

During the recent G-8 Summit meetings, President Bush discussed the advancement of his Hydrogen Fuel Cell Initiative and the need to push for increased U.S. technology transfer with Europe and Asia. According to sources, working with developing economies, like China and India, the administration would offer the initiative as a framework to curb oil consumption.

Pushing American hydrogen and fuel cell vehicle technology could likely enhance the United States' energy security outlook. The technology could lower energy consumption in the developing world, especially in China, according to administration officials.

The Bush administration’s hydrogen initiative is part of a larger strategy to use the transfer of advanced clean-energy technologies to counter foreign pressure to adopt mandatory climate change controls and to secure market share for U.S.-made vehicle innovation, while also helping to move countries toward lower emissions and energy consumption.
