Pint-size A3 Sportback for 2006 lands first with a FrontTrak model packing a direct-injection four-cylinder turbo worth 200 hp through a six-speed manual or Audi's Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). A3 3.2 S follows with AWD traction and a 3.2-liter V6 plus the DSG.

Audi of Germany applies alphanumeric names to cars sorted by size and the number of cylinders in an engine -- thus model tags like A4, A6 and A8. Further, in Audi's lingo the Avant label denotes a station wagon format, FrontTrak means front-wheel-drive (FWD) and Quattro signifies all-wheel-drive (AWD) with a permanently engaged mechanism that distributes the engine's power to all wheels. Currently, Audi is revising the entire line through a three-year process that begin in 2004 with a new treatment of the high-tech flagship sedan, A8L.
