New Trend In Car Service: Giving Customers The Star Treatment

A fully equipped gym, an exclusive restaurant, and a barber shop - they're amenities you'd expect to find at a private club. Soon, however, they may be things you can also find at your local... car dealership?

Island Lincoln-Mercury near the Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida is the first car dealership to offer its customers not just a vehicle, but a lifestyle as well. Owner Bruce Deardoff wanted to give his clients something to do while their vehicles were being worked on at the newly expanded 14,470 square-foot service center. Much more than plastic chairs and a TV, The Island Club boasts a gym with both men and women's locker rooms, a 38-person movie theater with a 16-foot screen and a George Lucas THX sound system and an Internet café called "Carbucks." Silent pagers let customers know when their car is ready and the rules of membership are simple: buy or lease a new or used vehicle and you're a member as long as you own or lease it.

The goal is to increase the dealership's service business and give customers a reason to come back, even if they're not in the market or in need of a tune-up. Whether or not the luxury treatment increases business remains to be seen but one thing is certain, the customers are loving every minute of it.
