New permanent exhibition-FOSSIL MYSTERIES From dinosaurs to mammoths, discover the rich fossil history of our region. In this major exhibition created by the Museum visitors can play the role of paleontologist: ponder a mystery, examin the strong fossil evidence from the Museum's collection, and use scientific tools to discover answers. Traveling through a 75-million-year timeline, from the age of dinosaurs to the Ice Ages, visitors will experience an unfolding of the prehistory of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California, Mexico. Developed by the San Diego Natural History Museum.   • Through November 30 Giant-screen film-Vikings:

Journey to New Worlds Take a cinematic adventure through time and unravel the intriguing myths surrounding Viking culture. This film, a comprehensive portrait of the Vikings, explores their historical and cultural impact as well as their technological and scientific achievements. Sail with Erik the Red from Iceland to Greenland, and then with his son, Leif Eriksson, to North America where he landed 500 years before Columbus. Developed and distributed by Sky High Entertainment.

  • Through January 1, 2007: Traveling exhibition-Dinosaurs

Reel & Robotic See how dinosaurs, Hollywood's biggest stars, first came to life in the movies and follow their transformation over the years through artistic portrayal and advances in scientific information and technology. Enjoy original movie memorabilia, posters and models, an interactive animation studio and, of course, giant robotic dinosaurs. Movie memorabilia and related materials are from the traveling exhibit CINE-SAURUS The History of Dinosaurs in the Movies, which is organized and circulated by Czerkas Studios. Animated dinosaurs created and circulated by Kokoro Dinosaurs.

  • Through February 25, 2007: Art gallery and sale -- VISIONS of the NATURAL WORLD through the LENS of the MASTERS

Discover brilliant fine-art photography! VISIONS is a collaborative effort between the Museum and The Ordover Gallery, and is presented in a series of eight shows that feature nature-based photography of nationally recognized artists; sculpture and glass will also be exhibited. From July 15-September 10, Water: Impressions and Abstractions will feature artwork by Elizabeth Carmel, Dick Ditore, Abe Ordover, Lisa Jordan, Frans Lanting and Jeffery Laudenslager. From September 16-November 12, Galen Rowell: A Retrospective will feature artwork by Galen Rowell, Abe Ordover, Philipp Scholz Rittermann, Dick Ditore and Jeffery Laudenslager.   • Through April 2007: Regional exhibition

Earth, Wind & WILDFIRE Fire, people and nature are powerful forces that shape the ecosystem. How can they coexist? Why should they coexist? Through objects, videos, photographs, and interactives, experience the beauty of southern California and examine the complex relationship between fire, people and nature. Explore the power of fire, its historical context, and present challenges. Take a close look at ways to best manage wildlands based on sound science. Take a fascinating journey into Mexico's beautiful Sea of Cortés and the Baja California desert. Morro Bay serves as the base for exploration on this fun family camping outing. Hike the rugged coastline of Montaña de Oro State Park, look for sea otters, and explore tide pools. Amphibians have extraordinary traits and behaviors that allow them to survive both in and out of water, making them some of the most remarkable tetrapods in the world. Explore amphibian biology using preserved specimens, skeletons, and dissected material. Subjects will include basic anatomy, vocalization, local diversity, metamorphosis, and global amphibian declines. Member $25; Nonmember $33. Ensenada's culture and livelihood is ocean-based: discover the city's fascinating aquaculture. Take a scenic boat ride toward Punta Banda and Todos Santos Bay and visit oyster, mussel and protected blue-fin-tuna aquafarms. Stop by the local university to learn about restoration efforts for the tatoaba population. Stroll along the promenade, visit the fish market, and enjoy a traditional seafood meal.

Imagine solving fossil mysteries that are millions of years old! Now you can! Join Dennis Schatz as he reads from his fossil detective books: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Woolly Mammoth, and Triceratops. Touch real fossils and then put on your paleontology hard hats and reconstruct the bones from an ancient animal and use your detective skills to figure out what caused its demise.
