The four-door Spectra hatchback appeared first in 2001 as a spin-off from the four-door notchback Sephia sedan. In 2002, both sedan and hatchback adopted the Spectra name and gained fresh designs inside and out. For 2003, new standard features go to both versions, such as a rear wiper/washer with intermittent feature, body-colored side moldings and a stereo kit with CD deck. A twin-cam four-cylinder engine fires the pair to 125 hp, with options for either a manual five-speed or automatic four-speed transmission. Two trims work for the hatchback: Base Spectra GS is the economical version yet still with sporty airs, while upscale Spectra GSX increases standard equipment with air conditioning, power windows and central locking, alloy wheels and a body kit with winglet spoiler. The sedan also has two trims with base Spectra and LS adding air conditioning, a tilting steering wheel, power locks and a tachometer in the instrument cluster. Cabin layout consists of front bucket seats and a back bench for three that suits two best. Small cars often skimp on safety features, yet these match class leaders with air bags and adjustable three-point seatbelts, plus structures with integrated front and rear crumple zones, steel bracing in side doors, collapsible steering column and childproof rear door locks.
