Miles Javalon XS500

Electric vehicles don't have to look like glorified golf cars or have weird styling. They can look like normal sedans with normal amenities and creature comforts. That's the rather ambitious goal of the Javalon XS500 all-electric, four-door, five passenger sedan being developed by Miles Electric Vehicles in Santa Monica, CA.

The company, founded in 2005 by activist/entrepreneur, Miles Rubin, already markets a line of low-speed electric vehicles. These include the ZX40 and ZX40S station wagons and ZX40ST work truck.

Like the ZX40 series, the XS500 with styling by Pininfarina will come from China, but use U.S. made electric motors and controllers. The XS500's advanced technology lithium ion batteries will provide a range of about 120 miles on a single battery charge that takes 4-6 hours using the on-board intelligent charging system and 110 Volt power.

The company expects the batteries to have a lifetime of 125,000 to 150,000 miles

The cars top speed is 80 mph making this a highway-speed all-electric sedan. Like other Miles EVs, the XS500 will meet appropriate U.S. NHTSA (National Highway Transport Safety Administration) standards and will include advanced airbags and world class safety features. Options and accessories will include air conditioning, power seats and windows, sunroof and bluetooth capability.

Miles expects to start selling the Javalon XS500 in late 2008 or early 2009. It is quite affordable, by EV standards, of $32,000 to $35,000
