Andreas Wirth Leads Morning Warm-up but Crashes to Bring an Early End to Final Practice

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - While Andreas Wirth (#37 INDECK/Layer 7/Wirth Solar) was happy to be sitting at the top of the scoring sheets at the end of Sunday's 15-minute warm-up session at Edmonton's JAGflo Speedway, the session didn't end the way he had hoped.

Wirth's time of 1:05.400 (108.606 mph) was the top lap of the final practice before today's West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix Presented by The Brick Atlantic race (tape-delayed on SPEED at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 29). But the Forsythe Racing sophomore lost control of his car in Turn 9 at the 1.973-mile City Centre Airport circuit and made hard contact with the tire wall. Wirth was uninjured, but the cleanup from the crash forced the session to end three minutes early. Fortunately, the Forsythe crew has ample time to repair the car with five hours between the end of warm-up and the start of the race. Wirth will start fourth on Sunday.

Polesitter Raphael Matos (#6 ProWorks) of Sierra Sierra Enterprises posted the second-fastest time in the morning practice as he recorded a lap of 1:05.677 (108.147 mph). Matos earned his second career Atlantic pole on Saturday after setting a new course record lap at Edmonton.

After qualifying sixth yesterday, Jonathan Bomarito (#23 Miracle Sealants/Dynacor) of PR1 Motorsports was third in warm-up with a top lap of 1:05.843 (107.875 mph).

Series leader Simon Pagenaud (#15 Team Australia/Location U/Cons. Gen. Vienne), who will start second today, owned the fourth-fastest warm-up time of 1:05.900 (107.781 mph).

Today's Round 8 of the Yokohama Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda will begin from a standing start at 4 p.m. ET. The race is scheduled for 36 laps or 50 minutes at JAGflo Speedway.
