Junqueira Confirms Pole At Road America, Tracy Sixth

Bruno Junqueira will start Sunday's Mario Andretti Grand Prix of Road America from pole position. The Brazilian has been fastest in every session so far, and even better news for him is that series leader Paul Tracy will be starting in sixth position. The extra point he earned this afternoon reduces the gap to 18 points.

The Brazilian has dominated the weekend so far, and the fact that he is a full half a second faster than the chasing pack must add to his confidence for race day.

"I love this track," said the polewinner, who scored his first career victory here in 2001. "And I'm also very happy to score my first pole of this year here. The earlier rain didn't help the track conditions, but to be half a second ahead of the others is awesome. It's good for my teammate Sebastien to be second too. Let's hope for a 1-2 finish tomorrow."

Just to emphasize his speed, Junqueira shaved a further two tenths from his Friday pole in Saturday's session, his fastest lap being a 1:43.703 (140.524mph).

His Newman/Haas Racing teammate Sebastien Bourdais will line up second, having lapped in 1:44.242 (139.798mph) to fill the front row for the team. "I can't take too many risks at the start," said the rookie of the year points leader, "Bruno is fighting for the championship. But my car is good, and I know we will work together."

Starting third will be a Player's/Forsythe car, but it's not the one of Paul Tracy. Instead, Patrick Carpentier will start on the inside of row two having qualified at 1:44.306 (139.712mph).

Fourth will be Oriol Servia, 1:44.314 (139.701mph), and completing the top five with a career best qualifying is Mario Dominguez on 1:44.378 (139.616mph).

Champ Car World Series point leader Paul Tracy will start in sixth, having not qualified outside the top three in the previous 11 events.
