Adrian Fernandez Wins Action Packed G.I. Joe’s 200

Adrian Fernandez won an incident-filled G.I. Joe's 200, round eight of the Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car Series Powered by Ford. It was his eighth career win, but more importantly the first for him as a team owner.

Paul Tracy took second place, having had an afternoons of ups and downs -- including a clash with Michel Jourdain -- but he leaves Portland with the series points lead, while Alex Tagliani finished in third place.

"I'm absolutely thrilled," said Fernandez. "I had a fantastic car, especially at the end of the race. It was great to race with Tracy and Jourdain, and they were very fast at the beginning so we pulled away from the rest.

"At the last pit stop my car really came alive. Then Paul made a small mistake at the last corner, and I was able to get by into the lead. It was difficult out there. We were pushing hard, and then we had the rain too."

Tracy started from pole position, but was beaten to the first corner by Jourdain who led to the second round of pitstops, on lap 44. Tracy's crew just got him out ahead, but he pulled sharp left in front of Jourdain as he exited his pit.

Three laps later, Jourdain took a run for Tracy's lead at the Festival Curves. They got through the first part OK, but locked wheels on the left hand portion, with Jourdain spinning round and stalling.

Tracy was awarded a five second penalty at his next pit stop for the way he had exited the pits, and his team urged him on to pull out enough of a lead over Fernandez to try and cover it. When he did pit on lap 72, he made it out just ahead, but one lap later came the mistake that allowed Fernandez through to win. It was an eventful afternoon for PT...

Tracy said: "I'm disappointed for the team. We led the race and made the most of the car. But I blew it, ran wide, got on the marbles and Adrian got a run on me, and he had the fastest car at the end. But, we've got the points lead, and Portland has never been a great track for me, so we can't be too disappointed."

On the incident with Jourdain, Tracy said: "It was one of those things. I saw him coming, gave him room, he turned in accross me, gave me nowhere to go, and that was that."

The Mexican, who was the series leader going into this race, lost a lap getting restarted, and, like a number of drivers this weekend, was unhappy with the Canadian. "I had him clear," said Jourdain. "I was completely in front of him. I guess I was the last one he hit this weekend..." He ended up in 12th place, scoring the final point.

Alex Tagliani took third place for the Rocketsports team, having been under pressure for most of the afternoon. The Canadian also set the race's fastest lap on lap 95, 1:00.875 (116.442mph) "We had a really competitive car today. It was hard to get temperature into the tires quickly after the pit stops, but the crew did a great job at the stops.

Tracy leads the championship now with 90 points, but it's tight at the top, with Bruno Junqueira up to second, four points behind, with Jourdain slipping to third, eight points adrift of the lead.

Junqueira had a good race, finishing in fourth place after starting 11th, while his team mate Sebastien Bourdais raced back from an early puncture from last place to what would have been third had his rear wing not failed nine laps from home.

The Champ Car World Series moves from Portland to Cleveland for round nine of the Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford on July 5.
