3M Product Helps Protect Your Paint From Winter’s Ravages

Most people are familiar with the benefits of protecting a vehicle's engine and interior parts from harsh winter conditions, but what about the paint?

Sand, salt and other road debris can wreak havoc on paint. People are investing more money than ever before on new vehicles and often keeping them longer, and at the same time paint materials and labor costs continue to rise.

Scientists at 3M developed a unique solution to combat this problem. It is a clear, eight-mil-thick urethane film called Scotchgard Paint Protection Film. The film is professionally installed and is basically invisible so your vehicle's lines and paint color aren't altered. Scotchgard film is difficult to detect with the naked eye, yet has withstood 3M's advanced weathering tests for durability in extreme cold and heat.

The film was originally developed by 3M during the Vietnam War to help protect helicopter blades from sand abrasion. The film was further engineered and introduced to the automotive industry by 3M in the late 1980s. It is used all over the world, and is the only paint protection film to be an Exclusive NASCAR Performance Product.

Scotchgard film should be applied by a trained professional. Each film piece is cut specifically for a vehicle, and applied using a combination of liquid application solutions, a squeegee, cloth and other basic tools. Installation can take anywhere from a half hour for a kit that covers the hood and fender caps, to several hours for a complex, multi-piece kit, or for installation on an RV. Scotchgard Film helps protect vulnerable areas like the front end, bumper, fenders, wheel wells, mirror backs and door edges.

Scotchgard Paint Protection Film has many applications, from passenger vehicles, classic cars and motorcycles to race cars and street rods, and from boats and semis to tractors and RVs. 3M warrants that its film will be free of manufacturer's defects for five years, and many professional applicators offer additional warranties.

Professional film installation is available through many new car dealerships, and by authorized film converters and trained applicators across the country. For more information about the film and sources of supply, call 888-663-1394, or visit www.3M.com.
