Guess Who Drives More Than Half Of New V6 Mustangs?

Add more models to Ford Motor Co.'s ever-growing array of Mustangs. Two new V6 special-edition Mustangs are slated for model year '08, as is the return of the infamous Bullitt, Ford officials announced recently.

Kim Pittel, director-small cars for Ford, says the two new V6 Mustangs are expected to appeal more to women buyers than current offerings because 56% of Mustangs equipped with V6 engines are sold to women, a company spokesman says.

Ford already offers two Mustang packages geared toward female buyers: the Mustang GT/California Special and Grabber Orange Pony package for V6 models. Both favor styling upgrades over performance improvements.

Hau Thai-Tang, chief engineer of the current-generation Mustang, says, with the explosive growth in recent years in the automotive aftermarket, Ford is trying to appeal more to those craving appearance changes versus increased horsepower.

Ford currently offers six Mustang variants, Thai-Tang says, discounting body styles and engines. Pittel says the possibilities are infinite. 'I'm looking right now out (to) 2011,' she says of future Mustang trims. 'We just have stuff coming, coming, coming.'

Relevance:

  • Women often have different tastes in car customization than men. Knowing that a significant number of women purchase Mustangs may help specialty-equipment companies better target their products.

  • According to SEMA research, the top three accessories women purchase are: 1) alarm systems, 2) window tinting, and 3) air intakes.
