Tennessee Graduated License Law

Learner’s Permit Class PD

Age 15+

Requirements

  • Pass vision & knowledge test.
  • Proof of school attendance.
  • Parent/Legal guardian sign Affidavit of Financial Responsibility.
  • Birth Certificate & Social Security.

Restrictions

  • Licensed driver 21 or older in front seat.
  • Cannot drive between 10:00 p.m. & 6:00 a.m.
  • Seatbelts or child restraint as required by law.

Intermediate Restricted License

Age 16 +

Requirements

  • Have held Permit minimum 6 months.
  • Certification of 50 hours supervised behind-the-wheel experience, including 10 hours at night.
  • Fewer than 6 points on driving record during 180 days immediately preceding application.
  • Pass driving test.

Restrictions

  • Only 1 passenger.
  • Cannot drive between 11:00 p.m. & 6:00 a.m.Seatbelts or child restraint as required by law.

Intermediate Unrestricted License

Age 17 +

Requirements

  • Held Intermediate Restricted License for minimum 1 year.
  • Fewer than 6 points on driving record & no conviction of fault in traffic crash.
  • No more than 1 seatbelt violation within previous 90 days.

Restrictions

  • Seatbelts or child restraint as required by law.

Regular Class D Driver’s License

Age 18+

Requirements

  • Pass vision, knowledge & driving test.
