South Dakota Graduated License Law

Instruction Permit

Age 14+

Requirements

  • Pass vision, knowledge, and driving test.
  • Must hold the valid permit continuously for 180 days or 90 days with completion of approved Department of driver education course.

Restrictions

  • Licensed driver 18 or older with at least 1 year driving experience in seat next to permit holder.

Restricted Minor’s Permit

Age 14 +

Requirements

  • Pass vision, knowledge, and driving test.
  • Complete requirements of Instruction Permit.
  • Not been convicted of a traffic violation during the past six months prior to obtaining the Restricted Minor’s Permit.
  • An individual up to age 18 years of age may hold a Restricted Minor’s Permit.

Restrictions

  • Must have Permit in possession.
  • May operate vehicle from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the permission of parent or legal guardian; and during the hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. if parent or legal guardian is occupying a seat beside the driver.

Operator’s License

Age 16 +

Requirements

  • Pass vision, knowledge, and driving test.
  • Under 18 - Completed requirements of Instruction Permit.
  • Not been convicted of a traffic violation during the past six months prior to obtaining the Operator’s License.
