Massachusetts Graduated License Law

Learner’s Permit

Age 15

Permit Restrictions:

Must be accompanied by operator who occupies passenger seat next to you, is at least 21 years old, holds a valid driver’s license from Massachusetts or another state, and has at least 1 year driving experience.

If you are under 18, parental consent required. You may not drive between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is a validly licensed operator with at least 1 year of driving experience.

Before Junior Operator’s License:

Hold Permit at least 6 months.

Maintain a clean driving record at least 6 consecutive months.

Complete approved driver education & training program (30 hours classroom; 6 hours behind-the-wheel training; & and 6 hours of in-car observing another student driver.

Complete at least 12 hours supervised, behind-the-wheel driving provided by a parent or guardian

Junior Operator’s License (JOL)

Age 16 & 6 Months - 17

You may not operate a motor vehicle between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by your parent or your legal guardian.

First 6 Months: While any passenger under age 18 is in the vehicle (other than you or an immediate family member of any age) must be accompanied by person at least 21 years old, who has at least 1 year of driving experience, holds a valid driver's license from Massachusetts or another state, and is occupying a seat beside you.

Before Driver’s License: Must have driver’s education certificate.You must also have an additional 12 hours of driving with a parent or guardian.

Driver's License

Age 18

Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Class D permit or have completed JOL requirements.
