Louisiana Graduated License Law

Learner’s Permit
Age 15

Must complete 30 hours classroom instruction and 6 hours behind the wheel driving instruction - approved high school or commercial driver education course.

  • Must pass visual examination, written and road sign tests.

  • Authorized to drive with one licensed parent, guardian, or adult at least 21or sibling at least 18.

  • Must maintain learner's license for a minimum of 90 days and cannot change to intermediate stage until attainment of 16th birthday.

Intermediate License
Age 16

Must have completed Learner’s Permit requirements. Pass the on-road driving test.:

  • Prohibited from driving between the hours of 11:00 PM-5:00 AM, unless accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian, or adult at least 21 or sibling at least 18.

  • Must be maintained until attainment of 17th birthday.

Full License
Age 17

Must successfully complete Learner’s Permit and Intermediate License stages OR minimum 17 years of age prior to application for first license.

NOTE: First time applicants 17 years of age or above may apply for a Class E license or a Learner's Permit upon completion of a full driver's education course or a 6 hour pre-licensing course. An out-of-state applicant 16 years of age who has had a license or permit for a minimum of 90 days may be eligible to bypass the learner's permit stage and be issued an intermediate.
